Feeling listless.
I was out present shopping today for some friends who are getting married. A Danish-Scottish wedding which should be interesting - but more on that nearer the time. It's a nightmare buying wedding presents, I got them a set of towels, how dull.
I shocked my mother though by saying that if I ever get married I don't want a conventional wedding list. Instead I want a list of all the CD's, DVD's and books I would like. Why should I want a conventional list? I already have a kettle, toaster and other assorted household items. I don't need any more of these things, surely one kettle is enough?
Traditional wedding presents were for a time when people were just moving into their first home after marriage and didn't have these things. Modern life is very different, people move out of home at a young age (I hightailed it out of there at the tender age of 17). People live together and build a home together for years before tying the proverbial knot. I have all the nests of tables and throw cushions my heart could desire, what I don't have is someone to marry.
So why is it strange to want the other things, the luxuries in life which I would love but I am too busy paying bills to afford? In honour of this I have decided to make up my own alternative dream list. Not that there's going to be a wedding (apart from the Danish-Scottish one but that's not mine).
1. Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The complete 7 series boxed set.
2. West Wing - The complete 7 series boxed set.
3. An MP3 player with a skip button that works.
4. The complete Sandman in hard back editions.
5. Two tickets to see the Rolling Stones.
6. That necklace I saw in that shop last week, it was very pretty.
7. That dress I saw in that other shop last week, it was very pretty.
8. A trolly dash around Accessorize, lots of pretty things.
9. A fortnight's holiday in Sorrento, it is a very pretty place.
10. A digital camera. Useful to take pictures of aforementioned pretty things.
So there you go, that's my list. Is it strange that I'd rather have these things than a toast rack? What do you think?
Oh and by the way, if you're feeling very generous....

Looks like a fairly decent list to me. I'd lived with my ex for three years before we got married, so we didn't have a traditional list either; it had stuff like "set of yellow questions for Trivial Pursuit" (this was 1987!) etc, and we still got a mountain of towels and four clocks. No matter what you do, you'll always get that stuff.
I also like Accessorize; not really into "pretty things" but it's got some nice belts. And bags. And necklaces. And bracelets. And earrings. Shit, I think I'm getting all girly in my dotage ...
I like the music and DVDs idea! I think I'd be happy with an expresso machine though.
Mines going to be a stuff-I've-always-wanted-but-never-been-able-to-waste-money-on' list I think! Snowglobe, racing pigeon and bonzai tree will all be on it. Oh and that badger puppet I'm now craving.

I am really not girly and I am not particularly fond of the colour pink either. However accessories, and Accessorize in particular are my achilles heel. Oh I love handbags and scarves, and jewellery too but I also love lightsaber battles and comic books and action movies. I like to think that one cancels the other out.
Either that or I'm just a geek with a handbag fetish.
Ahh, I made a DVD wishlist like that the other day, which came to £109.96. :(

Is it sad that I really just want the Buffy box set? The other stuff would be nice too but I've been asking for the Buffy set for over a year! Still my birthday is coming up soon enough.
H this is a fantastic idea. I have a list of CD's and DVD's I would love to buy but can't afford to, and as you say you do really only need 1 kettle. However if you do get loads of stuff you don't need there's alway e-bay

Heather, where are the Jimmy Choo shoes? They're very pretty.
Oh damn fine point there Skeadugenga, shoes especially by Mr Choo are mighty fine things, but I'm more of a handbags and jewellery lady myself. Ok I'll add a couple of pairs onto the list, so that's one pair of Manolo Blahniks, one pair of Jimmy Choo, one motorised tea bag carousel, a snow globe,a bonzai, a racing pigeon and an espresso machine all added to the list.
Any more ideas?
Mmmmm Accessorize! I love pretty things, the pinker (is that a word?) and shinier the better! A couple of my friends got married recently which freaked me because I realised that makes me old enough to get hitched too! Noooooooooo, I'm still only a child (in my head anyway).
Love the idea of the unconventional list Heather; mine would have to have a doughnut maker on there somewhere. It's something I've always wanted but I know would only ever be used once.
I mean to do the whole of Buffy at some point. Several people whose opinion I respect say it is a damn fine series. And then I have to do the OC.

Buffy is utterly superb. The writing and characterisation are beautiful and the character development is just perfect.The action and romance is pitch perfect. The fact that it is about vampires is just a bonus.
I was fortunate enough to see Joss Whedon the creator of Buffy give a talk at the Edinburgh Film Festival last year. He did not dissapoint, being both humourous and highly interesting, and displayed that touch of humility in himself that makes you care about his characters.
I say fortunate as there were people in the audience who had paid £400 for a ticket and a couple who had flown in from the US. It was a 5 minute bus ride for me and my ticket was £7.00.
He also was responsible for the script of Toy Story and for the wonderful Serenity which came out last year. Buffy is definitely worth a watch, I'll admit I'm not so sure about the OC.
