Nice 'n' Sleazy

Being the cultured sort of lady that I am I spent an hour last night watching VH1's Storytellers. Bon Jovi were the stars of this particular episode playing their tunes and recounting the tales that go alongside them. Now something struck me about the audience. They were nearly all female. This isn't the first VH1 Storytellers that I have watched* and in the other shows the audience has been far more evenly spread between the sexes, if not male in the majority.

This led me to question why Bon Jovi of all bands seem to have an overly female demographic. Is it because they are good looking? Well yes they are, but there are other rock bands with attractive members out there that don't have anywhere near the level of female fans that Bon Jovi do. The answer it seems to me is that Bon Jovi are essentially non-threatening. They seem like nice guys. Nice. Now as my beloved art teacher Mr Wilson used to say to me, "nice isn't good, nice is bland. Never describe anything as nice, art is black and white, brilliant or awful never just nice. "

Don't get me wrong I love Bon Jovi's music and if Mssrs Sambora** or Jovi were offering I doubt I'd refuse, but when it comes to rock'n'roll I like something more. I want my rock gods to be a little bit dangerous, a little bit sleazy, a little bit dirty. I want the Robert Plant's, the Slash's and the Nikki Sixx's of the world.

It's strange really because in real life I always go for the nice guys.***

Ladies and gentlemen, how do you like 'em? Naughty or nice?

* The Bowie one is a cracker.
** Apparantly Sambora makes Tommy Lee look like a tiddler. Heather Locklear obviously likes 'em large.
***Actually I'm sure they are all lovely guys in real life, Robert Plant in particular, but you know what I mean.

I dread to think what this says about me psychologically speaking, but female singers I like to be as filthy as possible.

Got to be a bit naughty haven't they...I kinda like the idea of one that would scrub up well enough so that yer mum doesn't give you a hard time, but would most certainly give you a hard time between the sheets. Bon Jovi - they're nice, music is nice, they don't swear, mum's like them...housewife music as it were. Give me Eddie Vedder any day...(please would someone give me Eddie Vedder, please)

That's got to be a interesting category, appears all sweet and innocent but is in fact utterly, utterly filthy.

Or is it is utterly filthy but is capable of keeping it in (as it were) when the situation demands, reserving the filth for later when it is needed the most. :)

Sounds good to me either way.

And then of course, there's the question of whether we want someone like us or the complete opposite.

I find myself flitting between the 2.

I'm definitely drawn to innocent looking, but privately filthy. As to whether that's like me or completely the opposite, I couldn't say, because I'm much too demure and ladylike to offer an opinion.

ukxgrkld - possibly one of the Orks from LOTR ?

Hmmm... so the verdict seems to be innocent exterior, naughty interior.

(not that I'm taking notes or anything)

See what you really want is all that nice on the outside, chocolate armadillo on the inside stuff, plus someone who isn't high maintenance and 'gets you' - as opposed to abandoning you in supermarkets when you start doing a rendition of fame!

"abandoning you in supermarkets when you start doing a rendition of fame!"

Just singing, or dancing as well?

Jools said...

B - dancing of course!
Poe - well not too nice looking of course, but you know not looking like you've brought a tramp home to yer mum

"B - dancing of course!"

It would have to be singing as loud as possible, while stood on the back of a trolley, freewheeling down an aisle for me to consider abandoning.

Freestyle singing and dancing is fine. :)

It's all about the heart.

Naughty or nice.

*Smile* at what Min said.

You want them filthy really, but with a sort of sensitive side which doesn't show itself very often but you know is there so they're not going to treat you bad or anything.

As far as rok stars go...........Nasty I think. They need to have that 'Leave Me Alone' aura thing going. Chummy pop idols are fine to a degree, but you'll never fall in love with them.

In terms of Rock'n'Roll, it's better to be loved/feared/admired than it is to be respected. Always beware of respected rock musicians, they tend to be session men or The Rolling Stones.

So, who ya in luv wiv then Jules? =D

I think I just like sneery, distant, contemptuous rock stars. That's how I think they should behave. It's how I hope i'd behave if I was one. In reality though, i'd probably be more Billy Bragg than Billy Idol.

Good to see you around again Jules!
